On to St. Kitts

I woke up extra early the morning we were approaching St. Kitts (anything before 7 on a ships cruise counts as extra early).  From the rocking of the boat I could tell we were still at sea and this energized me.  Grabbing my camera I dashed up to deck five and left my husband in the dark cave of a stateroom;  I wanted to smell the salty morning air and see the island from the water.  I found myself all alone on the bow of the ship with St. Kitts looming quite close, waters shimmered.  Those 20 quite minutes were a trip highlight for me.  St. Kitts was the only port of call where we got a true overview of the entire island;  since it was starting to rain the boys negotiated a good price with the taxi service and we hopped into a van driven by Castella (the best driver in all of St. Kitts).  Castella did not call us sweetie, it was "Darlin'". She drove just the 6 of us around the entire island and chatted happily the whole time about island life, pulling over and stopping whenever we had something we needed to check out.  We ended the day with lunch and snorkeling at de cockelshell beach.  Here's some picture highlights.  Likely, you've noticed that I can't pick just a few!

(approaching St. Kitts early that morning)

(as soon as you walk off the boat, men put monkeys on you, hoping to make a buck.  It kind of freaked me out.)
 Basseterre

(As Castella says, while barreling down the road full speed, "me and the goats, we have an understanding." Yep, the goats did get out of the way.)

(The mural inside the ladies bathroom at the restaurant.  Yes, the men's bathroom had dancing women, but the Mr. did not photograph them.)

At the end of the day I told Castella that if the Baptists didn't want her anymore, the Mormons would love to have her!  She was amazed that all the boys in her van that day had served missions :)

I missed taking a shot through the window of some graffiti that said, "God still hears prayers".  So I got this at the end of the day instead.  True dat.

Abby, I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to hearing more of your detailed stories about living there now that I've seen the island for myself. I can't believe you actually lived there with your two little munchkins! You are amazing :)
