Winsome Twinsome

8 years ago when Luna and StarGirl were "graduating" from pre-school, their fabulous teacher Mrs. Allred (oh how I love that woman) pulled me aside and said, "I want you to know that your daughters are both really smart." I looked at her, nodding my head, but she continued, "They're REALLY smart, Becky. It will surprise you in life and. . . don't expect all your other kids or the girls friends to be quite on the same page as them."

I filed that one away in my mental note box.
Girls = Smart. Check.

I was reminded of this this morning at the special 6th grade awards ceremony.
Handsome was able to get the morning off and we both attended with Sunshine and Bingley in tow.
One award after another, they just kept standing up and receiving awards. Both of them.

Winning Worker, Bug Club, etc. I was feeling proud.

Then the ELP teacher got up to explain the Math Olympiad awards. This is an international Math Competition and he wanted to impress upon our minds how crazy hard it is. Some of the problems were: "111,111 is the product of 5 prime numbers. What is the sum of those 5 numbers?" or " What is the sum of the lowest three “twiner” prime numbers (twiner = a non-prime number between two prime numbers. For example, 30 is a twiner between primes 29 and 31).
There were more examples and I thought. I don't even know where to begin to answer those questions!

Imagine my surprise when he started reading off names of kids who'd done well on the test and Luna stood up! And then, in a moment of drama, Mr. ELP named the top two kids from MacArthur finishing in the 90th percentile and my very own StarGirl got up to receive her award, joining her sister on stage! I turned to My Handsome Husband, laughing, "Did you know our girls were so smart?"

After that the very last award was announced called the Presidents award where they pick two students from each class for a District Level award. The description of the student is to excel academically while also being fun loving, kind and mentoring to others.

Up stood Luna.
Up stood StarGirl.

They beamed holding their awards certificates in front of them and I shook my head in amazement.

Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, as Mrs. Allred had already warned me 8 years ago!

Congratulations daughters. You are BOTH amazing.

Wow. I love that they are smart, AND help others. What an amazing award to receive...and both of them receiving it. You are an awesome Mom.

I would love it if your blog focused more on how to raise Maddies and Savannas. I would not mind one.

Wow. I am so proud. And I feel strangely responsible. Remember those Classical CD's I gave you while you were pregnant with them? Yep. It was me. All my doing, you're welcome. Great job girls! I would have been a beaming Mother, even a beaming Aunt had I been there. Can't wait to see all of you smarty pants this Summer!
