If you are ever thinking that New Years is a boring holiday, that there's nothing to do, it's too hard to find a babysitter, or you'd rather just go to bed on time instead of staying up to ring in the new year, then think again. Take a look at the pictures here, the imaginative resourcefulness oozing from these fine futuristic people and you will know what to do. Just throw yourself a little "Distant Future" themed New Years Party and the word "ho-hum" & "New Year's Eve" will never cross your lips in the same sentence again.
It does not need to be an elaborate celebration in order to be future-riffic. The guest list was small, basically the same gathering we have for a regular Sunday dinner plus some delightful friends who would feel most comfortable and welcome at any Sunday dinner gathering. It was the details that made it extra special.
Here are the prerequisite components:
A little mock-tail bar where you can mix some cherry with your Sprite. Throw in a slice of lime if you're feeling a little bit crazy. Very futuristic.
Eat sushi, the food of the future for sure. Though Reachel does assemble and roll her own sushi by hand (I kid you not) this is by no means necessary for a successful party. The Sweet Soy Sauce was noticeably tasty as was the edamame, inari sushi and freshly fried tempurah.
A good play list is a must. Our songs for the evening included "Rocket Man" by Elton John, "Life on Mars" by David Bowie and a personal evening favorite, "Mr Roboto" by Stix. We also watched a clip of "Robots/The Humans are Dead" by Flight of the Conchords. Very funny people, those two.
And of course, everyone dressed up in their own take of "Futuristic." The guests' willingness to dress up makes the party. I basically spent the bulk of the evening taking pictures of everyone (and also trying--though not succeeding--to refrain from dancing. It is not a pretty sight in my current condition, but that doesn't mean my feet don't itch when spacey techno tunes start a playing).
Once it was late enough that our minds were loosing just a touch of our lucidity we played this game. It starts with a printed idiom/proverb at the top of the paper. One person draws their interpretation of said idiom then folds down the words at the top and passes it to the next person who looks only at the drawn intepretation and writes down new words to go with it. Its a bit like telephone only with pictures. The end results are very amusing.
When you're counting down the midnight head outside for a little sparkler action! Then, robotically hug your signifigant other and head home where you'll crash into bed from exhaustion. All that fun made me tired. But honestly, I couldn't fall asleep. Instead I kept laughing to the point of severe heart burn at the proverb game phrase, "I don't eat junk food. I dress like Robin Hood. My butt hurts and I am sad". If that's not words to live by, I don't know what is. This sentence was Mr. Handsome's response to my sad & sorry drawing of the phrase "Anorexic Incompetent Apprentice." (Surely you can see the connection to the original sentence "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy). It was just that late and I was that tired.

You guys go to more parties than anyone else I know! Such a fun life!
Being a party pooper myself, I have to agree, Reachel and Andrew throw a good one. It was so great to spend the evening with good food and good company.
Glad y'all had such a fun celebration to welcome in the new year. We did watch a couple of old movies , I can't even remember now what they were, and we ate a bowl of popcorn. That was about all the excitement we could stand. Oh, I almost forgot, we did watch some fireworks from our upstairs windows.
Everyone wears robes in the future. They're so practical.
{This was a fantastic party}
