Hot Mumu Mamas

Mumu is defined on wikipedia as: The muʻumuʻu (IPA: /ˈmumu/; Hawaiian: IPA: [muʔumuʔu]), commonly spelled muumuu, muu-muu or mumu, is a loose dress of Hawaiian origin that hangs from the shoulder.

I like to define it as a hysterically ridiculous theme for a Girls Night Out Party and a sure way to laugh your head off throughout a great evening.

If you know my uber-talented sister, Nancy, then you know she is the queen of throwing a great party. Last year for her birthday "we" threw her an awesome Pajama party (I say "we" because though my mom, myself and her friends were "in charge," it was--speaking off the record here--all orchestrated under Nancy's strict party planning instructions!) This year she truly outdid herself and threw a "South Beach Housedress/Mumu" party. It was a combination "Nancy's Moving Soon, Liz is having a Baby, Stephanie moved back into town Party." It also happened to land on my Birthday, so I like to feel it was also in my very own honor. You can read about the inspiration for this party here (it involves leopard print and its funny. In fact, every story Nancy tells is funny especially if it involves sperm donors or Private Investiagors who drive Hummers, or the crushed dreams of lost Pontiac Grand Ams. But I digress. . .)

I really didn't think I was going to get to go to this Mumu party (since I'm supposed to be wearing a hospital gown by now having delivered baby number 6), but my son on the way decided he wanted me to party it up instead of pushing him out. But I'm so happy I got to go! When Nancy came up to greet me in her hot pink mumu with gold trim bling, gold sandles and lots of heavy gold jewlery I started laughing so hard I felt like water was going to come out of my noise! And I wasn't even drinking anything! The girls all got so into their "costumes" (available at Ross and Walmart, but not Target or T.J. Maxx--does this give you insights into their marketing strategies?)

Sisters Dawn and Dusty both went to different Ross stores and picked out the exact same dress!

So forgive me that I didn't try to win the "Ms Mumu" Pagent with a glamorous get up (yes, they did have a surprise competition. The prize was a rainbow colored feather duster.) But I did get to wear Nancy's actual "house dress." It is a blue zip up terry cloth style robe that she got at her bridal shower from her mother-in-law. It came with the following instructions: "This house dress is for when you get in your first fight with your husband. When you're mad at him, just put this dress on and you'll look so unattractive that he'll leave you alone." Ha!

So thanks for having a house dress party on my Birthday, Nancy! And thanks to my little son who let me go to it. It was simply "inspirational" and I hope to throw my own House Dress Girls Night Out Party soon (or soon-ish, as the case may be). If you are reading my blog, consider yourself invited! Or better yet, throw one at your house, as you'll likely get around to it much quicker than I will. It will be sooooo much fun and I promise to get a better costume when I come to your house! Hot Mumu Mama's Unite!

I'm glad you got to come, and that you had such a good time! You forgot to mention that your dancing, nine-month pregnant karaoke rendition of Thriller was the hit of the party! I swore I took a picture of you, me and mom and then when I downloaded my pictures I was very upset that I hadn't. Maybe we will have to do a reinactment.
