Steak Satisfaction

Mr. Handsome's been craving steak.

After competing in last weekend's duathalon, he talked of nothing but steak for dinner. We must have steak!!

But we had a few problems:
Problem #1: We have no steak in the house.
Problem # 2: Even if we did have steak in the house, I don't know how to cook it right.
Problem # 3: Our evening is booked with meetings, no chance we'd get out to a steak house.

But the cravings would not subside. I can relate to cravings that you just can't shake. We had to satisfy this urge!

So while he was at his meeting I had the inspiration to order 2 steak dinners online at Outback Steakhouse (super easy). I drive up, they bring it out to me (super easy, again). I didn't even have to get out of my car! Genius.

He was most happily surprised when I arrived home with his steak dinner. He oohed and ahhed with each bite. The wife felt good. Outback had saved the day.

Then later this week I noticed sirloin steaks were on sale at Sprouts.
Why not try some fire grilling of my own?

He was again surprised when he pulled in last night to smoke billowing from the grill in the back yard. I grill very rarely (yes, enjoy that pun). You could say I've been "burned" in the past. So it was a courageous move, going up against Outback so soon after his appetites had been satisfied. But I've watched Bobby Flay win Iron Chef enough to feel up to the challenge!

The verdict?
The wife wins.
He loved it.
The kids loved it.
Everybody raved.
Oohs, ahhs, and the final complement:
"this is way better than Outback Steak House."

It was my first true steak victory. Though nobody had the guts to tell me, I know every steak I'd made before this was a dried out loser.

Here is the recipe, friends. Let's all thank Rachel Ray.

Sirloin Steaks

Rub:
3/4 c. dark brown sugar
5 T. grill seasoning blend (use Montreal Steak Seasoning by McCormick)
3 ( 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inch thick) sirloin steaks

Mix the sugar and the steak seasoning. This sounds strange, like you're going to have overly sweet steaks. But trust me, it works. Pat the steaks dry and then coat both sides with the blend. cook over medium heat for a total of 10-16 minutes for medium rare to medium well doneness. I did 6 minutes per side and they were gorgeousness. Let stand five minutes for juices to redistribute. Dig in and let the rave reviews flow in!

They were so good that we ran back to Sprouts that very night to buy more on the last day of the sale. Yum!

I concur. Absolutely fabulous! Beat the Outback steak, hands down.

I look forward to more in the near future.

(It is true, we have some funny burned steak stories in our past)

I'm a real hit and miss griller myself. I'm printing of your instructions and give it a try. Thanks from an old dog learning new tricks.

Now I wish I had bought some of those steaks at Sprouts... too late now.

Richard must be having sympathy cravings. They say you crave red meat when you're pregnant with a boy. Sounds good. I've strangely been craving eggplant parmesan from your other fav The Olive Garden. Haven't been there in years, but we might have to venture there soon.

I bet Rachael Ray is not half as good of a wife as you are.

Awesome job on the grill. Right now I am sitting inside freezing in Utah. I cannot imagine being at a grill.

Glad you had such success with your steak grilling. I will admit we have had better success since we took back the BBQ to Costco and got a different one. But steaks still seem to dry out on the grill at our house. We have better success with pork ribs and with them I have to do it half in the oven.

I'm glad you've overcome the steak! Brian and I have steak pretty regularly (it's pretty inexpensive when there's only two of you). I always seare them on the stove top and then move the pan to the oven for a few minutes to cook. You know, because it's no fun to grill in the snow!
