This year was no exception
(And here's a long aside: Courtney mentioned that she was ready to throw in the towel before they even started due to many a kid melt down. . .I remember those days all to well when costumes were "too itchy, mama!" and kids were baffled by their parents insistence that they dress up. It gets better as they get a bit older. Mine will likely be completely uninterested in a few years, so I relish this age where they still want to trick or treat with mom and dad! Ah, the grade school years. I love em!) But back to my post:
Halloween couldn’t have been any better.
We kicked off the morning with a great birthday brunch/play date for Sunshine. On the menu: pumpkin waffles, & chocolate waffles with the most divine Buttermilk Syrup (ohh, you must try this liquid manna from heaven!! I will post the recipe at the bottom), "toxic" turkey bacon, Aunt Nancy’s breakfast casserole, grapes and ghost cookies. Somebody asked me why I did all this at 6 months pregnant and all. . .I just thought, I love birthdays! To me, this is what makes being a mom fun. I mean, I like clean laundry and a clean house, but I REALLY like having a fun time with my friends & family. And if I'm feeling up to it, we're having a party, people. Thankfully this has been the easiest pregnancy of my maternal career (knock on wood!)
Later that night, we got deep into serious face painting territory. This is where a mom's creativity gets really energized. I am no professional artist, but I did get the pleasure of transforming my daughters into beings from galaxies far, far away!
Then the whole family walked our favorite Halloween neighborhood. It is delightfully “old fashioned Halloween fun”. People sit on their front porches giving out candy, some ladle out homemade root beer from wicked caldrons, one family projected “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” on their garage and gave out water bottles instead of candy. . . LOVE that! The children felt happy and unified marching down the side walks in our first year of costume themes for the whole entire family. This is my kind of Halloween. Nothing scary. Just the kid friendly fun.
And we made it home in time for Handsome to get ready for his race in Casa Grande the next morning. Just a perfect evening.
This really deserves its own post, but I'm tagging it on here:
So this Buttermilk Syrup is to die for. I got it from my culinary friend who lives in Boston with her adorable family. Check out her short (but oh so sweet) posts on delicious food, food based memories and the comfort of a great recipe. EVERY recipe I have tried from her blog has been pure taste bud magic. She will not let you down.
Buttermilk Syrup
1 cup butter
1 cups buttermilk
2 cups sugar
1 t. baking soda
4 T. Karo syrup
2 t. vanilla

I love it all. The party, the pictures and especially your neighborhood Halloween traditions. I think if I ever get a projector I would do the same thing, so fun! And by the way had a lovely evening last night. And I forgot to mention that the gift for Sophie was from mom too. If I must say so myself I think it was a hit!
p.s. I tried to teach Sophie that the baby's name was Nancy, maybe you could help her remember.
Loved Sophie's party and seeing you during trick-or-treating. Sorry I was such a sleepy head when you came by :-)! And I forgot to thank you for covering for me on the whole Mindy Gledhill concert attendance thing. You know me well!
How fun to have a Halloween baby. The party looks great!
Nancy & mom,
Sophie LOVES the baby doll. Loves it like its her own child. She is constantly mothering. Tucking her in and changing her diaper, etc.
Didn't know about the "Nancy" name, & she has dubbed her "Lola" or sometimes "Soda" which is easier for her to say than Lola. And sounds really yummy right now. Must be dinner time.
Can we say WOW!!!! Becky, the costumes are all so pricelss, so wonderful. What a party spread, geez I am comming over for 101 lessons in festivites.
And I am really proud of Rich and all of his energy, he rocks!!!!
If all kids could have a Mom like Becky. If I could be a little more like Becky. You are enthusiasm and creativity personified.
Thank you for inspiring me to be a little more awesome. I never enjoyed Halloween as much as I did while reading your post.
What a fun party in celebration of Sophie and Halloween, the food looks great! Wish we could have been there for it all. Your fun Halloween evening makes one wish for the warmer climate! It wasn't bad here, it did rain a little although it has been sunny and warm most of the month of October. Your family's costumes are spooktacular! How on earth will you outdo yourself next year?
I LOVE your family's costumes!!! You are an amazing party-giver (as I remember from the MBA days). What a great Halloween celebration!
I am amazed at your all-out halloween breakfast and festivities. Sounds like a fun tradition. Great costumes!
I'm glad you love Halloween too, I've got too many friends who simply don't like it. I'm CRAZY about Halloween.
