For a while now I've been a wee bit ornery about the state of my back yard (okay, so its been about 5 years of back-yard orneriness, but who's counting?). It has potential, but its really just some overgrown plants and a lawn full of clover patches, weeds, stickers, brambels, etc. Seriously, its a mess and I don't even know where or how to begin to fix it without throwing down some big time bucks.
BUT
despite all this I decided this week to make the most of it-- you know, "bloom where I'm planted" so to speak.
We got out all the old pots we could find and after one successful trip to Home Depot, I have an entire corner of my back yard that is pretty to look at. My heart could sing!
After this little beautification project I've found myself outside much much more. Just wanting to soak up some yellow ranunculus joy!
We felt so inspired by the flowers that The Professor and I have been HARD at work putting in an entire bed of tasty veggies to eat. We have based our project on the awesome book Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. If you think you would like a garden but have no idea where to begin, think it sounds like too much work or have a history of killing your plants. You must get this book!
I have loved each minute of the process and can hardly I made this planter box myself (with my trusty assistant, The Professor). The kids and I had a blast picking out plants at Home Depot and Lowe's. My Professor became so enamored with the interesting shapes of cacti and succulents available, I think we're gonna have to do a special few desert pots just to reward him. I'll show you what our final product is after we plant out this afternoon. And now, please excuse us as we have some plants that need us out back!
These two may have been having more fun than all the rest of us! to quote The Baron: "This is the best hot day ever!"

I'm very impressed! Hallie keeps asking to do something similar. She's been having a hard time lately so maybe I should take her over to Home Depot and do something similar.
Nancy -- I saw at Lowe's you can get square foot garden "kits" for 40 dollars -- that might be worth it if you dont have a bunch of tools on hand, but if you could have Kent build you a few, especially with scrap lumber, you could do it really really cheap! Then you could sing to her "Hallie, Hallie, Bowling alley, How does your garden grow?" She would think that was hilarious!
Love your beautiful plants, glad they bring joy to you and your family. I have been happy because my little ailing meyer lemon tree has begun to blossom so I can tell it's spring too.
